Do you remember Sokol, or is it totally new to you? In the month when Czech National Day is observed, it is appropriate to (re)discover and re-evaluate Sokol, a highly patriotic movement.
Mark Dimond will give an illustrated talk on the history of Sokol since its origins in 1862. He will look at the initial development of the gymnastics movement until the First World War, highlighting the peak of its activities in the interwar period, describe its dismantling at the hands of both the Nazis and Communists and its re-emergence after 1989.
Mark has completed a DPhil thesis on the history of the Sokol movement. He worked in Prague in the early 1990s and was Baileys Brand Manager for the Czech and Slovak Republics. Mark is currently the Rector at King’s Lynn Minster.
This event will take place in person and will also be livestreamed.
