Extended introduction by Gareth Evans
Eugene leads a double life – married to Milada, he also dreams of the beautiful Evgenia. Trying to swap his dreary life for a dream life, he seeks help from a psychoanalyst, who, under the disapproving gazes of Freud and Jung framed on her wall, attempts to interpret his experiences. Also featuring his jealous wife and his super-ego portrayed as a repulsive, overbearing bag lady, this icily sarcastic, surrealist collage about the dark forces of the male subconscious, combines live action with animated passages. One of Švankmajer’s most light-hearted films and a charming psychological masterpiece uses a combination of striking visuals and an endearing story of love and fantasy that will appeal to lovers of Terry Gilliam and Jan Lenica as well as admirers of his more rigorous explorations.
