A winner of the best actor award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Slovakia’s entry for the Oscars.
It is Christmas, and Milan, who’s been working in Germany to provide a better life for his family, returns home to discover that his prolonged absence has taken its toil. His eldest son is now a member of a paramilitary youth group, and is involved in the death of a class-mate. As he starts to investigate, pressuring his son, he calls into question the deep-rooted traditions of his faith and village realising that he must overcome his own failings before he can protect his son from being led astray.
This excellent compelling drama about the strength and fragility of family ties addresses the far-right extremism through the prism of a family raising its children in the prevailing culture of xenophobic hate.
